Delhi High Court Grants Interim Protection To Karisma Kapoor’s Children In Sunjay Kapur Estate Dispute

The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted interim protection to the children of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur from his previous marriage with Karisma Kapoor, restraining his widow Priya Kapur from dealing with significant parts of his estate during an ongoing inheritance dispute.

Justice Jyoti Singh, leading a single-judge bench, ordered the preservation of the estate while the court adjudicates the matter.

The court noted that the children, Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Kapur, along with Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the contested will.

The burden to address these concerns now lies with the widow, though the final determination on the will’s validity will take place during trial.

The court found a prima facie case in favour of the children and barred Priya Kapur from transferring, selling, pledging, or altering shareholding in Kapur’s Indian companies. It also restricted withdrawals from provident funds, disposal of personal belongings, artworks, and cryptocurrency holdings linked to the estate.

Additionally, specified Indian bank accounts cannot be operated beyond payments required under obligations arising from the divorce settlement between Sunjay Kapur and Karisma Kapoor.

The court extended restrictions to certain foreign accounts and crypto assets, while clarifying that it does not have jurisdiction over immovable properties abroad.

The case stems from a suit filed by the siblings seeking their share in an estate estimated at Rs 30,000 crore. They have challenged a will dated March 21, 2025, alleging that it leaves the entire estate to Priya Kapur and forms part of a conspiracy to exclude them and their grandmother.

Separately, in a defamation matter, Justice Mini Pushkarna directed Priya Kapur and Mandhira Kapur Smith to avoid public statements against each other during proceedings.
