Delhi High Court Defers Youth Congress Plea Against Jantar Mantar Protest Ban To Monday

The Delhi High Court on Friday declined to urgently hear the Indian Youth Congress (IYC)’s plea challenging the Delhi Police’s refusal to permit a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar. The court scheduled the hearing for Monday.

Senior advocate Sanjay Ghosh mentioned the petition before Acting Chief Justice Nitin Vasudeo Sambre and requested an urgent hearing.

The Acting Chief Justice questioned the urgency and said the court would hear the matter on Monday.

IYC President Uday Bhanu Chib filed the petition challenging the police decision to deny permission for a peaceful demonstration against the CEC.

According to the plea, the organisation applied to the Delhi Police on September 25 to hold a protest involving around 100–150 people.

The petition alleged that the police communicated their rejection on October 1, the proposed protest date, despite repeated follow-ups.

The planned demonstration comes amid ongoing protests by Opposition INDIA Bloc leaders demanding action against Gyanesh Kumar over the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Congress leader Udit Raj backed the demonstrations, saying the Opposition had a responsibility to protect democracy.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Opposition leaders joined the protests. Police detained several leaders during a march towards the Election Commission’s office and released them hours later.

Delhi Police have tightened security around Jantar Mantar, deployed personnel and erected barricades near the Election Commission’s office.

Authorities have, however, imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), restricting certain gatherings.

Separately, the Delhi government ordered specified liquor outlets to remain closed for two days from Friday to maintain public order ahead of the planned Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest.
