Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna will retire today, bringing an end to his tenure as the 51st CJI of the Supreme Court of India.
He assumed office on November 10, 2024, and served for just six months in the country’s highest judicial office.

Formally, Justice Khanna recommended Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai as his successor.
Justice Gavai will become the 52nd Chief Justice after approval from the Law Ministry and President Murmu.
His appointment marks a milestone for inclusivity, as he hails from a Scheduled Caste background.
His appointment underscores the increasing diversity and representation in the Indian legal system.
In line with judicial tradition, Justice Khanna will sit alongside his successor on a ceremonial bench.
The Supreme Court Bar Association will host a formal farewell ceremony for Justice Khanna.

Appointed to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, Justice Bhushan Gavai has since served with distinction.
At 64 years old, Justice Gavai is set to serve as CJI until November 23, 2025, when he reaches the retirement age of 65.
Hailing from Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985.
He later specialised in Constitutional and Administrative Law at the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court.
He has held several prominent legal positions, including Assistant Government Pleader, Additional Public Prosecutor, and Government Pleader for the Nagpur Bench.
Justice Gavai brings a fresh perspective to the judiciary, drawing on his extensive legal experience and deep knowledge of Constitutional law.
His appointment advances inclusivity, diversity, and fairness within the Indian judicial system.
