Former Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki received major relief from the Allahabad High Court, which approved his bail in a case registered under the Gangster Act. Following SP leader Azam Khan, Solanki is the next party leader to get a chance for release from jail.
Justice Sameer Jain granted bail not only to Irfan Solanki but also to his brother Rizwan Solanki and co-accused Israel Attewala.
Irfan Solanki represented the Sisamau constituency in Kanpur. After his conviction, he lost his legislative seat, and his wife won the subsequent by-election from the same constituency.
Solanki has spent the past 24 months in Maharajganj Jail, while authorities have lodged the other accused in Kanpur Jail.
The High Court heard all three bail petitions together and reserved its decision on September 2 after hearing arguments from both sides. Jajmau Police Station in Kanpur registered the case against the three accused under the Gangster Act in December 2022.
The bail petitions argued that the case against Solanki was politically motivated. Since all three accused had already secured bail in other cases, their counsel requested bail under the Gangster Act as well. After examining the facts, the court granted bail to Irfan Solanki, Rizwan Solanki, and Israel Attewala.
Irfan Solanki had previously secured bail in multiple cases. In March 2025, the court granted bail to him and his brother Rizwan in an extortion case. Additionally, on October 1, 2024, they received bail in a case involving assistance in creating fake documents for a Bangladeshi citizen.
In June 2024, the Kanpur MP-MLA Court sentenced Solanki to seven years for setting fire to Najir Fatima’s house in Jajmau’s Defence Colony, which cancelled his legislative membership. The High Court had granted bail in this case on November 14, 2024, but refused to stay the sentence, preventing him from regaining his MLA seat.
