Yogi Government’s Initiatives Revive Traditional Pottery; Mati Kala Board Records ₹4.20 Crore Sales

The Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board recorded record-breaking sales of ₹4.20 crore in the financial year 2025-26. A series of state, regional, and district-level pottery fairs drove this achievement.

The total sales rose by ₹91 lakh compared to the previous year, marking a 27.7% increase despite fewer stalls being set up this year.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath envisioned uplifting traditional artisans and promoting indigenous craftsmanship. His proactive approach played a central role in this success.

The government launched targeted initiatives in marketing, branding, and skill development. These efforts helped pottery products from Uttar Pradesh reach domestic and international markets.

The 10-day Mati Kala Mahotsav held at Khadi Bhavan, Lucknow, from October 10 to 19, 2025, recorded impressive sales worth ₹1.22 crore across 56 stalls.

Similarly, regional fairs held in Gorakhpur, Agra, Kanpur Dehat and Moradabad (October 13-19) featured 126 stalls that collectively generated ₹78.84 lakh in revenue.

In addition, the 3-day district-level Mati Kala fairs conducted in 70 districts (October 17-19) achieved ₹2.19 crore in total sales through 509 stalls.

In contrast, during FY 2024-25, 878 stalls had generated ₹3.29 crore in sales.

The increased revenue despite fewer stalls underscores superior product quality, improved event management, and stronger market networks.

The surge also indicates a rising consumer preference for traditional pottery and growing artisan confidence.

The Mati Kala Board empowers artisans through advanced design training, product innovation, and branding initiatives. These efforts aim to ensure long-term sustainability.

The Yogi Government established the Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board to safeguard traditional crafts and support artisans’ livelihoods.

The board now provides employment and self-reliance opportunities to thousands of families.

The government introduced a landmark policy that allows Prajapati community members to extract clay free of cost from village ponds.

This initiative reduces production costs and ensures uninterrupted pottery manufacturing.

These measures highlight the government’s determination to modernise traditional crafts while making them globally competitive.

The CEO of Khadi and Village Industries and the GM of the Mati Kala Board praised the government for its consistent support. They said well-planned programs played a key role in the success.

They said these initiatives enabled artisans to connect directly with buyers.

“Consumers warmly embraced local pottery and traditional products during the fairs,” he stated, adding that the board plans to expand these fairs across more districts to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s presence in global markets.
