Who Will Succeed Arvind Kejriwal As Delhi CM? Strong Buzz Over Five Names

With Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announcing his resignation in two days, political circles are buzzing with speculation about his potential successor. The sudden announcement has left many in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) surprised and questioning who will lead the party next.

Possible Contenders for the Chief Ministerial Post

Several names are emerging as potential successors to Kejriwal. Here are the top contenders:

Atishi

Atishi is viewed as a leading candidate to replace Kejriwal. She played a crucial role in drafting AAP’s manifesto for the 2013 assembly elections and has been a vocal leader in the party. Her involvement in key party events, including hosting the national flag at Delhi’s Independence Day program, highlights her significant role within AAP.

Saurabh Bhardwaj

Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj is another strong contender. Despite the legal troubles faced by top AAP leaders, Bhardwaj has remained a staunch defender of the party and has actively engaged with the issues concerning Delhi. His role in challenging Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena adds to his profile as a capable leader.

Gopal Rai

Gopal Rai, the Environment, Forest, and Wildlife Minister, is a long-time associate of Kejriwal. His clean image and foundational role in AAP make him a viable candidate. His consistent, uncontroversial presence in the party positions him well for a leadership role as the party aims to restore its image before the 2025 elections.

Kailash Gahlot
Senior Minister Kailash Gahlot, who oversees multiple departments, is also in the running. His experience managing key portfolios and his public support for Kejriwal emphasize his readiness for a leadership position. Gahlot’s role in hoisting the national flag at the Delhi government’s Independence Day ceremony reflects his commitment to the party.

Sunita Kejriwal

Although she has not yet entered politics, Sunita Kejriwal’s involvement in the party’s activities raises speculation about her potential role. Following Kejriwal’s imprisonment, she has been active in public rallies and party campaigns, including in Haryana. Her potential candidacy reflects a broader strategy within AAP to maintain continuity and bolster the party’s image.

Political Implications of Kejriwal’s Decision

Kejriwal’s decision to step down, despite being unexpected, is seen as a strategic move. Political analysts suggest that this move could portray Kejriwal as a martyr and position AAP as a party battling corruption. The interim arrangement, whether it involves a trusted aide or a new leader, is likely a tactical decision to influence upcoming elections.

AAP has indicated that this leadership change will be temporary, with Kejriwal expected to return as Chief Minister if the party wins the next Delhi elections.
