What? Married Woman Marries Brother For Gifts, Exploits Government Wedding Scheme in Uttar Pradesh

In an unusual turn of events, a married woman participated in wedding rituals with her brother to reap benefits under the Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivah Yojna in Uttar Pradesh. The incident, which occurred recently in the Lakshmipur block of Maharajganj during a community wedding function involving 38 couples, was reported by Deccan Herald.

According to the report, intermediaries persuaded the married woman and her brother to pose as bride and groom for each other during the wedding event. On the day of the marriage, the woman garlanded her brother and performed customary rituals, including circling the holy fire seven times to formalize the wedding. The couple also received gift items from authorities to commemorate the occasion.

Amit Mishra, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Lakshmipur block, stated that an investigation has been launched into the matter, assuring that strict action will be taken against those found responsible. He also clarified that the cash assistance provided under the scheme would not be granted to the couple. “The gift items presented to the couple have been reclaimed,” he added.

Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivah Yojna

The Mukhyamantri Samoohik Vivah Yojna in UP aims to support economically disadvantaged sections of society. Under this scheme, marriage ceremonies for women from such families are organized by the state government, respecting their social, religious beliefs, customs, and traditions, while also providing financial assistance.

Under the scheme, the Uttar Pradesh government allocates ₹51,000 per couple. The bride receives ₹35,000 directly deposited into her bank account to facilitate a joyful married life and establish a household, while the remaining amount is utilized for organizing the marriage event and distributing gifts.

This scheme has garnered attention due to instances of fraudulent activities. Recently, brides in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district were reported to have garlanded themselves at a mass wedding event under the scheme, with videos of the incident circulating widely on social media.
