In response to the tragic derailment of the Howrah-Mumbai CSMT Mail in Jharkhand, West Bengal Police have set up 13 helpline numbers across three Government Railway Police (GRP) stations in the state.
This move aims to assist those affected by the accident, which has resulted in two fatalities and numerous injuries.
The helplines include five numbers each at the Howrah and Sealdah GRP stations, and three at the Kharagpur GRP.
This initiative is to provide critical information and support to worried relatives and affected individuals.
The accident occurred early Tuesday morning when 18 coaches of the Howrah-CSMT Express (train number 12810) derailed between Rajkharsawan and Badabambo stations, approximately 80 kilometers from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand’s Chakradharpur railway division.
The derailment, which happened around 4 AM, has left at least two dead and 50 injured.
Most passengers were asleep when the derailment happened, causing panic and chaos as several coaches went off the tracks.
Passengers on upper berths were thrown to the ground, scattering personal belongings throughout the train.
At Howrah station, anxious relatives of passengers have gathered, seeking updates on their loved ones who were traveling on the ill-fated train.
In the wake of the derailment, the South Eastern Railway has halted train operations on the Tatanagar-Chakradharpur section.
Several trains have been cancelled, including the Howrah Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express and the Kantabanji Ispat Express, which were scheduled to depart from Howrah Station on Tuesday morning.
Additionally, authorities have rescheduled the departure times of various trains and are rerouting many to accommodate the disruption.
The authorities are working to manage the aftermath of the derailment and restore normalcy to the affected railway routes.
