Tensions escalated across West Bengal on Wednesday as a 12-hour general strike called by the BJP led to multiple incidents of violence and unrest.
In Bhatpara, North 24 Parganas, someone shot BJP supporter Rabi Singh, injuring him and prompting his hospitalization.
BJP leader Arjun Singh alleged that TMC activists ambushed and shot him and his associates while they were en route to a strike-related event.
TMC officials have denied these allegations, accusing the BJP of inciting violence.
In Cooch Behar district, police detained BJP legislators Malati Rava Roy and Nikhil Ranjan Dey, along with their supporters, for staging a protest at a North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) bus depot.
The confrontation led to a minor scuffle between police and BJP activists, with officers seen forcibly removing the detained individuals.
The unrest also spread to Muchipara in North Kolkata, where a clash broke out between BJP and TMC supporters.
The conflict began when BJP councillor Sajal Ghosh and his team urged local shop owners to close in support of the strike.
TMC supporters opposed this move, leading to a physical altercation that required police intervention to de-escalate.
The BJP’s strike was organized in response to police actions against protestors during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally, which was held to protest the brutal rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month.
The ongoing violence underscores the deepening political rifts and the volatile nature of the current situation in West Bengal.
