Vice President CP Radhakrishnan Launches Former CJI BR Gavai’s Book

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan on Tuesday launched The Voice of Justice Gavai Speaks, a book authored by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai.

Published on the initiative of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) and edited by Prof (Dr) S Shivakumar, the book released at a function attended by senior members of the judiciary and legal fraternity.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant presided over the event. Justice Vikram Nath, Justice BV Nagarathna, Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya, former CJI Sanjiv Khanna, retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, senior advocates and judicial officers also attended.

Addressing the gathering, Vice President Radhakrishnan urged lawyers to take up at least one case every year for the poor.

CJI Surya Kant congratulated Justice Gavai on the publication, describing the work as an important collection of judicial thought that should reach court libraries, law schools, judges’ chambers and young lawyers shaping India’s constitutional future. He said the book reflects a reasoned, humane vision of justice rooted in constitutional values.

Former CJI Gavai said judges are generally remembered for their judgments, while speeches are often delivered for specific occasions and rarely expected to be compiled into a book. He expressed hope that the volume would preserve the ideas that guided his judicial career over more than seven years as a Supreme Court judge and Chief Justice of India.

Justice Vikram Nath described the publication as timely, noting that it captures the thoughts of a respected colleague and close friend.

About the Book

Published by Thomson Reuters, the book includes Justice Gavai’s speeches on constitutionalism, the rule of law, social justice, fundamental rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), international judicial cooperation and the evolving role of the judiciary.

CJI Surya Kant has written the foreword.
