Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) portal and accompanying rules on Monday, marking a historic milestone. Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement the UCC.
During the launch, Dhami described the occasion as “historic not only for our state but for the entire country.” He acknowledged the support of the people, stating, “The credit for this goes to the people, who blessed us and formed our government.”
Dhami highlighted that the implementation of the UCC serves as a tribute to Dr. Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and the members of the Constituent Assembly.
He further highlighted that the UCC ensures equality of constitutional and civil rights for all citizens of Uttarakhand, granting women of all religions equal rights. The UCC will apply across the state and to all Uttarakhand residents living outside the state.
Moreover, addressing the event of the launch, CM Dhami also stated, “I would like to clarify again that the Uniform Civil Code is not against any religion or sect, there is no question of targeting anyone.”
Further, “Today is a historic day not only for our state but for the entire country as we are implementing UCC (Uniform Civil Code) in the state. Now every year 27th January will be celebrated as Uniform Civil Code Day in Uttarakhand,” said Dhami.
The Shatrughan Singh Committee developed the UCC rules based on its recommendations. Initially spanning 400 pages, the committee revised and condensed the document to focus on key reforms, excluding controversial provisions related to personal law disputes.
Further, during his address, CM Dhami expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support in facilitating the implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand.
