A notable move to strengthen the welfare and security of journalists in Uttar Pradesh has been announced following a proposal by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajeshwar Singh.
Singh revealed that after his recent meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the government has approved a sum of ₹80.31 lakh to establish the State Journalist Welfare Fund.
This decision, Singh said, represents a ‘historic step’ towards safeguarding the dignity, safety, and empowerment of journalists in the state.
He expressed gratitude towards Chief Minister Adityanath for his ‘sensitive and visionary leadership’, which he believes will bolster confidence and morale within the media community.
In his statement shared on X, Singh emphasised the crucial role journalists play in upholding truth and transparency in society.
Quoting his message, he said, “Journalists are the torchbearers of truth, no matter how deep the darkness, they have the courage to bring light.”
He further highlighted that journalists act as the ‘mirror of society’, and that strengthening their welfare directly contributes to the robustness of democracy.
Members of the media fraternity have welcomed the announcement, viewing the fund as a long-overdue initiative to support journalists facing professional or personal hardships.
The welfare fund will provide various forms of assistance, including medical aid, financial support during crises, and benefits for families of deceased journalists.
Rajeshwar Singh concluded his post by extending heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Adityanath for his commitment to the cause, reaffirming that the welfare of journalists remains integral to a healthy democratic framework.
