The 2025 Maha Kumbh has embraced modern technology in a groundbreaking way, as Uttar Pradesh Minister of Energy and Urban Development, AK Sharma, introduced a new initiative to improve safety, navigation, and communication for millions of pilgrims. In a tweet celebrating the occasion, the Minister hailed the event as a “Digital Maha Kumbh,” highlighting the use of technology to enhance the experience of devotees attending the world’s largest spiritual gathering.
In his tweet, Sharma shared a video offering a glimpse into the integration of digital technology at the Maha Kumbh Mela. The video showcased the transformation of the historic religious gathering into a modern event facilitated by the digital infrastructure of “Digital India.” The Minister emphasized the importance of these advancements in making navigation easier in the sprawling Maha Kumbh fair, where millions of people converge at the Sangam in Prayagraj.
One of the key innovations introduced by the Minister’s department is the installation of over 50,000 electric poles throughout the Maha Kumbh Mela area. While traditionally used for providing electricity and light, these poles are now much more than simple lamp-posts. Sharma described them as “Light Houses” in the crowded fair, providing crucial support to pilgrims navigating the vast space.

“These poles equippe with technology that helps not only with lighting but also with locating your exact position in the fair,” said Sharma in his tweet. “They are part of a digital system that ensures safety, easy communication, and swift assistance for attendees.”
The smart electric poles come with several technological features designed to aid visitors:
1.Geo-Mapping: The team has geo-mapped each electric pole using GIS (Geographic Information System) technology, allowing users to pinpoint exact locations easily.
2.Unique Numbering: The administration has assigned a unique number to every pole, enabling individuals to communicate their precise location to both the administration and their relatives.
3.Barcode Scanning: The poles are equipped with unique barcodes, which can be scanned for additional functionality. Scanning the barcode with a smartphone opens a simple form, allowing individuals to submit their name, phone number, and any problem they may be facing.
4.Real-Time Assistance: The information submitted via the barcode will be sent directly to the control room, where administrative officers will respond and provide assistance promptly. Sharma stressed that pilgrims should remain at their location after submitting the form, and help will arrive in no time.
Minister AK Sharma’s tweet concluded with a message of commitment to service, assuring pilgrims that the administration is always ready to assist. “We remain at your service,” he wrote, highlighting the efforts made to ensure a safe and smooth experience for the millions of people attending the Maha Kumbh.
This integration of technology into the world’s largest religious gathering marks a significant step toward the modernization of Mahakumbh, blending ancient traditions with contemporary innovations to serve the needs of today’s digital-savvy devotees. The “Digital Maha Kumbh” initiative reflects Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to enhancing safety, accessibility, and convenience for all those participating in the grand event.
