In a significant historical tribute, Minister for Health Professor SP Singh Baghel recently unveiled a book shedding light on the courageous struggle for independence in Ballia district. Ballia, situated in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, holds the distinction of being the first district to declare its independence on August 19, 1942, during the tumultuous years of British colonial rule.
The book, authored by Dr. Raj Darbari and HE Janis Darbari, offers a comprehensive exploration of the administrative affairs during those pivotal times under the leadership of administrator Jagadeshwar Nigam. It also delves into the various government activities that transpired during the British era.
The book launch event was graced by the presence of the Honorary Consul General of Montenegro in India, among other esteemed guests. During the event, the Hon’ble Minister lauded the meticulous research that went into creating this historical documentary. He recognized the significance of Ballia as the only district in India to declare independence on that fateful day in 1942.
One of the pivotal moments in the struggle for independence, often overlooked in the pages of history, was the transfer of power to freedom fighters such as Chatto Pandey and Radhe Mohan Singh, who played pivotal roles in the independence movement in Ballia.
The Union Minister expressed his anticipation for a Hindi version of the book, which would make this crucial historical literature accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, he expressed the hope for a feature film that could vividly portray the heroic struggles of Ballia during that era.
Interestingly, the Ambassador of Montenegro, Janis Darbari, had previously announced her intention to produce a film based on the book ‘The Administrator.’ This news had been eagerly awaited by history enthusiasts. Auditions for the film are set to commence shortly in Delhi.
The film’s narrative is rooted in the life of Jagdeshwar Nigam ICS and his valiant resistance against the British Raj. Janis Darbari, the granddaughter of Jagdeshwar Nigam, had the privilege of serving as the District Magistrate of Ballia during the independence movement in 1942. This unique familial connection spurred her to pen ‘The Administrator’ as a tribute to her grandfather’s remarkable legacy and commitment to the cause of Indian independence.
Ambassador Dr. Darbari, reflecting on the project, had previously stated her intention to create a compelling film that would shed light on Ballia’s history during the brief period of liberation in 1942. She noted how her grandfather, Jagdeshwar Nigam, had witnessed the injustices of British rule from a young age, as his father served as a lawyer in the courts, where he observed firsthand the discrimination faced by Indian citizens.
As the project takes shape, it promises to be an enlightening cinematic journey into the rich tapestry of Ballia’s history and its pivotal role in India’s struggle for independence.
