Union Home Minister Amit Shah To Address Public Meetings In Jammu Ahead Of Elections

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address five public meetings across the Jammu region on Saturday, ramping up the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) campaign ahead of the second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections.

According to party sources, Shah’s schedule includes rallies in Mendhar at 10:30 a.m., Surankote at 12:00 noon, Thanamandi at 1:15 p.m., Rajouri at 2:15 p.m., and Akhnoor at 3:30 p.m. He will then return to New Delhi after the events.

The BJP aims to strengthen its position in the Jammu region, where it expects to secure a significant portion of its 43 seats in the Assembly. In the 2014 elections, the party won 25 seats, primarily from this division.

The second phase of elections is set for September 25, covering constituencies in Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch districts in Jammu, as well as Srinagar and Budgam districts in the Valley.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi kickstarted the BJP’s campaign for this phase on Thursday, addressing rallies in Srinagar and Katra. He had previously campaigned for the first phase of polling with a rally in Doda on September 14.

Unlike its opponents, the BJP is contesting the J&K Assembly polls without forming any alliances. In contrast, the Congress and National Conference have established a pre-poll alliance, dividing 83 seats between them—31 for Congress and 52 for the National Conference—while leaving two for allies CPI-M and the Panthers Party. They also have five constituencies where they will engage in a “friendly fight” due to a lack of agreement.
