UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson expressed hopes for the protection of political and civil rights in India and any country undergoing elections, emphasizing the importance of a free and fair voting atmosphere. Stephane Dujarric made these remarks in response to concerns over political unrest in India ahead of the upcoming national elections, particularly following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the freezing of the opposition Congress Party’s bank accounts.
The UN’s statement comes after similar concerns raised by the United States, which reiterated its support for fair and transparent legal processes. The US diplomat was summoned by India in protest against remarks regarding Kejriwal’s arrest.
