At least three devotees were injured after a stampede-like situation developed at the Nagchandreshwar Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Monday.
The incident occurred as a massive crowd gathered for darshan on Nag Panchami, which coincided with the third Monday of Sawan.
The situation reportedly developed amid mounting crowd pressure in a barricaded area opposite the Harsiddhi Temple.
Authorities rushed the injured devotees to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Authorities were awaiting further details about their condition.
A large number of devotees travelled to Ujjain for special darshan of Lord Mahakal and Lord Nagchandreshwar, creating heavy crowds inside the temple complex and on surrounding roads.
Officials said around 5.50 lakh devotees had visited the temple so far, highlighting the scale of the rush on the auspicious occasion.
The Nagchandreshwar Temple, located on the third floor of the Mahakal Temple complex, opens to devotees only once a year on Nag Panchami. It remains closed to the public throughout the rest of the year.
Devotees from across the country visit Ujjain for the annual darshan of Lord Nagchandreshwar.
The coincidence of Nag Panchami with the third Monday of Sawan has resulted in an especially heavy turnout this year.
Ahead of the festival, Divisional Commissioner Ashish Singh and Collector Roshan Kumar Singh inspected arrangements and directed officials to ensure adequate barricading, drinking water, sanitation, medical facilities and emergency services.
The district administration deployed personnel to regulate the movement of devotees and manage the heavy rush.
Officials continued to monitor the situation and crowd movement around the temple complex.
