Panic spread across Delhi-NCR on Thursday morning after strong tremors from a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck the region.
The quake, recorded at 9:04 AM, had its epicentre in Jhajjar, Haryana, according to the National Centre for Seismology.
The tremors, which lasted about a minute, felt across Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and nearby areas.
Many residents rushed out of their homes and offices in alarm as the ground shook beneath them.
Officials said they are continuing to monitor the situation closely, although they have not reported any injuries or structural damage.
In response, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued an advisory outlining safety precautions to be followed before, during, and after such seismic events.
Reactions poured in from across the region, with many describing the tremor as unusually intense.
One Noida resident shared with IANS, “It was a very strong earthquake, and we were all terrified. But thankfully, it didn’t last long.”
“There were strong jolts. We were very scared. We just ran outside,” another stated.
A Delhi resident told IANS, “I could see the fan moving. We immediately ran out of our houses.”
“I was working on my laptop when I felt the chair moving. Then I looked at the fan, and it was also moving. I quickly ran out of my home,” a Delhi local asserted.
While no major earthquakes have struck near Delhi in the last decade, smaller tremors are not uncommon.
Just last month, a mild 2.3 magnitude quake hit South East Delhi with no reported damage.
Earlier in February, a 4.0 magnitude tremor originating in Dhaula Kuan also rattled the capital.
In April, a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region sent mild tremors across northern India, including Delhi, without causing harm.
The most powerful earthquake on record in Delhi dates back to 27 August 1960, when a 6.0 magnitude quake shook the region.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety protocols, even in the absence of visible damage.
