Authorities confirmed that at least 12 people lost their lives in a shooting near a Jewish gathering at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on Sunday evening.
Officials reported that twelve others sustained injuries, with a second shooter among them currently in custody. Police warned that residents should continue to avoid the area as they work to neutralise a suspected improvised explosive device (IED).
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes at Bondi as ‘shocking and distressing’. He confirmed that he had spoken with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner and New South Wales Premier and urged people to follow updates shared by NSW police.
On X, Albanese stated, “The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing. Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives. My thoughts are with every person affected. I have just spoken to the AFP Commissioner and with the NSW Premier. We are working with the NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed. I urge people in the vicinity to follow information from the NSW Police.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar expressed his outrage over the attack, labelling it ‘an anti-Semitic rampage’ that has escalated in Australia over the past two years.
Robert Gregory, CEO of the Australian Jewish Association, condemned the attack as both tragic and preventable.
Authorities continue to assess the security situation at Bondi Beach, including disarming the suspected IED.
Residents and visitors have been urged to follow official guidance to ensure their safety. Emergency personnel remain on high alert, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope and motives behind the attack.
Incidents like this highlight increasing concerns over anti-Semitic violence in Australia and the need for heightened security measures at public events.
Officials have called for vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement to prevent further tragedies and protect vulnerable communities.
