Thousands Undertake Peaceful Amarnath Yatra Amid Heightened Security

The annual Amarnath Yatra continues to proceed smoothly as another group of 4,627 pilgrims departed for Kashmir on Wednesday, escorted by tight security measures.

Officials from the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) reported that the Yatra, which commenced on 29 June, has been progressing without incident.

According to SASB officials, the pilgrims departed from the Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu in two escorted convoys early Wednesday morning.

At 3:07 AM, the first convoy, carrying 1,854 pilgrims in 90 vehicles, departed for the North Kashmir Baltal base camp.

Shortly after, a second convoy carrying 2,773 pilgrims in 95 vehicles left at 3:33 AM for the South Kashmir Nunwan (Pahalgam) base camp.

Following a recent terrorist incident in Kathua district of Jammu division, authorities have significantly reinforced security measures along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, crucial for the Yatra.

Partial Clouds & Light Rain Forecasted For Yatra Routes

The Meteorological Department has predicted partially cloudy weather along both Yatra routes, with the likelihood of light rain during the day.

Devotees participating in the Yatra can choose between the traditional 48 km Pahalgam route or the shorter 14 km Baltal route to reach the cave shrine.

Pilgrims using the Pahalgam route typically spend four days journeying to the cave shrine, while those on the Baltal route return the same day after paying homage.

Perched at an altitude of 3,888 meters above sea level, the cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that waxes and wanes with the lunar cycles, believed by devotees to embody the mystical powers of Lord Shiva.

Stringent security arrangements have been implemented across the nearly 300 km Jammu-Srinagar highway, the twin Yatra routes, the base camps, and the cave shrine itself, ensuring a secure and seamless experience for all participants.

To support the pilgrims, organizers have established over 124 community kitchens (langars) along both routes, as well as at transit camps and the shrine.

A dedicated team of over 7,000 volunteers (sevadars) is actively assisting pilgrims throughout the Yatra.

Helicopter services are also available to facilitate the pilgrimage experience on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, underscoring the commitment to ensuring accessibility and safety for all Yatris.
