Teacher’s Day 2026: Ashok Lahiri Outlines Healthcare Priorities For Viksit Bharat@2047

The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, marked Teacher’s Day with an Oration focused on India’s healthcare priorities and the goal of Viksit Bharat@2047.

Held at the APJ Abdul Kalam Auditorium, the event featured NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Lahiri as the speaker.

Faculty members, students and staff attended the programme.

Prof SK Sarin used the occasion to highlight ILBS’s efforts to take healthcare services beyond hospitals. He referred to initiatives for school children, the SMILES programme and outreach work in Madhya Pradesh, stressing the importance of prevention, awareness and early intervention.

Speaking on the theme ‘Reimagining Healthcare for Viksit Bharat@2047’, the NITI Aayog Vice Chairman outlined several areas that will shape India’s health sector over the coming decades. These included nutrition, infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, non-communicable diseases, affordable treatment, research and innovation.

Ashok Lahiri said India needs a healthcare system that is not only accessible and affordable but also focused on preventing illness.

According to Lahiri, successful health programmes must also translate into long-term public policy so they can reach a larger population.

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman pointed to the expansion of medical education, including the growth in medical and postgraduate seats, and stressed the need for a skilled healthcare workforce. He further discussed the role of Ayushman Bharat schemes and Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in widening access to healthcare.

The session highlighted that screening alone cannot deliver better health outcomes. Greater attention is required on nutrition, healthy lifestyles and reducing disease risks.

An interactive discussion followed the Oration, allowing participants to raise questions on healthcare policy, education, research and India’s health priorities.
