Suvendu Adhikari To Take Oath As Bengal’s First BJP CM; PM Modi, HM Shah Among Attendees

On Saturday, Suvendu Adhikari will likely take oath as the first Chief Minister from the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal since Independence, following the BJP’s victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Brigade Parade Ground and is likely to witness the presence of several senior National Democratic Alliance leaders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states are likely to attend the event.

The formal announcement naming Adhikari as the BJP legislature party leader was made by Shah on Friday during a meeting with newly elected BJP MLAs after the election results were declared on 4 May.

According to Shah, the selection process received eight proposals, all backing Suvendu Adhikari. He said the party gave enough time to suggest another name, but no one proposed an alternative before they finalised Adhikari’s nomination unanimously.

Adhikari secured victories from both the Nandigram constituency in East Midnapore district and the Bhabanipur seat in south Kolkata during the Assembly polls. In Bhabanipur, he defeated former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by more than 15,000 votes.

Suvendu Adhikari had earlier gained national attention in the 2021 Assembly elections after defeating Banerjee in Nandigram, earning the reputation of a ‘giant-killer’. His latest electoral success has further strengthened his position within the BJP leadership in West Bengal.
