Surat Bus Accident: PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia For Victims’ Families

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed profound sorrow over the devastating road accident in Gujarat’s Surat district that claimed at least seven lives and injured around 15 people. He also announced financial assistance for the victims and their families through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In a statement posted on X, the Prime Minister conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery to those injured.

Taking to X, the Prime Minister’s Office posted, “Deeply pained to hear about a mishap in Surat district, Gujarat. My condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Rescue operations are underway and authorities are providing all possible assistance at the accident site.”

“An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM,” the post read.

A Maharashtra State Transport bus travelling from Dhule to Surat via Navapur reportedly hit a tractor moving ahead of it near Uva-Manekpor village in Bardoli taluka.

The impact pushed the bus across the central divider. It then collided head-on with another Maharashtra ST bus travelling in the opposite direction.

Officials said one bus carried approximately 25 to 26 passengers, while the other had around 33 to 35 occupants.

The collision’s intensity caused one bus to overturn several times before it caught fire. The blaze trapped several passengers inside, complicating rescue efforts.

Firefighters, police personnel, ambulances, and emergency teams swiftly reached the site and launched extensive rescue operations. Authorities confirmed seven fatalities and around 15 injuries.

Officials continue to verify passenger identities and investigate the exact cause of the accident.

The crash also triggered significant traffic congestion on the highway for several hours.
