Supreme Court To Hear Abbas Ansari’s Bail Petition On 30 September

The Supreme Court will consider the bail petition filed by Abbas Ansari, an accused in the Chitrakoot jail scandal, on 30 September.

Ansari is seeking bail in relation to both the Chitrakoot jail incident and the charges under the Gangsters Act. Abbas Ansari, along with four other alleged gang members, faces charges under the Gangsters Act.

During a previous hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ansari, argued that Ansari received bail in all but two cases. Sibal expressed optimism that granting bail in these remaining cases would prevent Ansari’s arrest under the Gangsters Act.

Consequently, Sibal has requested that Ansari be granted protection from arrest.

The allegations against Ansari involve his illegal meeting with his wife in Chitrakoot Jail, leading to the application of Gangsters Act provisions against him and four others.

This case has also implicated the jail canteen contractor, Nikhat Ansari, and several other individuals.

Following the incident, authorities arrested the jail superintendent, deputy jailer, and wardens, though some have since released on bail.

The police have charged Abbas Ansari, canteen contractor Navneet Sachan from Karvi, Nikhat’s driver Niyaz Ansari, Samajwadi Party leader Faraz Khan, and Shahbaz Alam Khan from Varanasi under the Gangsters Act.

On February 10, 2023, Chitrakoot District Magistrate Abhishek Anand and SP Vrinda Shukla conducted a raid at the jail, leading to the detention of Nikhat Ansari.

The Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision will be pivotal in shaping the legal proceedings surrounding Abbas Ansari amidst these serious allegations.
