Delhi High Court To Hear Statue Installation Case On October 1

The Delhi High Court is set to hear a case concerning the installation of a statue of the Queen of Jhansi on the road linking Motia Khan and Rani Jhansi Road in Sadar Bazar on October 1. During a hearing on September 25, representatives from the Muslim community stated they submitted a letter of apology to the court’s registry.

The Muslim side expressed an unconditional apology for filing the petition, which had sought a written retraction of certain terms used by the Shahi Idgah Managing Committee. The court emphasized the need to keep communal politics out of its proceedings, describing the language in the appeal as potentially inflammatory. The court suggested that the focus of the argument appeared to divert from addressing the court itself to other parties.

Additionally, the court reminded the parties involved that it had previously ordered local authorities, including the police, DDA, and MCD, to beautify the area in question, following a request from community members. The court also voiced its discontent with claims that the installation of the statue could disrupt law and order, asserting that the Queen of Jhansi is a national hero and a symbol of pride.

The court has previously stated that the petitioners lack the legal or fundamental right to oppose the maintenance of the park surrounding the Shahi Idgah. The committee referenced a gazette notification from 1970, asserting that the Shahi Idgah Park is an ancient property established during the Mughal era and is utilized for communal prayers, accommodating over 50,000 worshippers at a time.

As the court prepares for the upcoming hearing, the implications of this case for both community relations and local heritage remain significant.
