The Supreme Court has initiated suo moto proceedings in response to the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The court will review the case on Tuesday, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra joining him.
The case, titled ‘Alleged Rape and Murder Incident of a Trainee Doctor in R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, and Related Issues’, comes after several letter petitions urged the court to intervene.
These petitions called for immediate and impartial investigations into the incident, highlighting the need for judicial oversight.
Dr. Monica Singh, a medical professional, filed one such petition through her advocate Satayam Singh, seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention.
She requested not only a thorough investigation but also the establishment of robust security measures at medical institutions nationwide to prevent future occurrences.
Her petition emphasized that the attack was an assault on the healthcare system and called for comprehensive guidelines to safeguard medical professionals.
The petition underscored that the incident at R G Kar Medical College represents more than just a single act of violence; it signifies a severe assault on our healthcare infrastructure. It however emphasized the importance of the Supreme Court’s prompt intervention to restore public confidence in the legal system and to ensure the safety of our medical institutions.
In related developments, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R G Kar Medical College, has been under intense scrutiny.
He has been questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at their Salt Lake office for four consecutive days, enduring lengthy interrogations lasting 13 to 14 hours daily.
The CBI is examining if Ghosh directed the recent renovations to a room near the seminar hall, which took place shortly after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe.
