On Monday, the Supreme Court declined to hear a petition challenging the cancellation of the UGC-NET 2024 examination due to alleged paper leaks.
A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, announced the decision.
The bench remarked that with nearly two months having passed since the examination’s cancellation and a new exam scheduled in the coming days, considering the petition at this stage would only introduce further uncertainty and potential chaos.
The petition, filed by a group of UGC-NET aspirants, sought the Supreme Court’s intervention to stop the re-examination.
They argued that the cancellation was arbitrary and unjust, especially given recent CBI findings that suggested they fabricated evidence of the paper leak.
The petitioners highlighted the significant distress and financial burden caused by the exam’s cancellation, asserting that it disrupted their academic and professional plans and undermined confidence in the examination process.
The petition requested an immediate stay on the August-September 2024 re-examination until the CBI completes its investigation and sought a fast-tracked review under the Supreme Court’s supervision.
The UGC-NET 2024, initially held on 18 June, was canceled by the Union Ministry of Education the following day.
The ministry cited concerns about the examination’s integrity and announced a fresh exam while referring the matter to the CBI for further investigation.
