Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday enquired about the well-being of Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal following an attack at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded.
Sources said PM Modi spoke to Badal’s wife and SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal over the telephone.
The incident occurred around 11 AM when Badal visited Mata Sahib Gurdwara in the Hazur Sahib area.
A Nihang carrying a kirpan allegedly attempted to attack Badal as he prepared to leave the gurdwara. His security personnel intervened and prevented a more serious assault. Police detained the alleged attacker.
Badal suffered an injury to his right arm and received medical treatment.
SAD spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler said Badal remained healthy and reassured supporters about his condition.
SAD Vice President and Punjab Core Committee member Sanjeev Talwar described the incident as ‘a direct attack on Sikhism’. He alleged that the assault could be part of a conspiracy aimed at disturbing Punjab’s communal harmony.
Kler blamed ‘anti-Sikh forces’ for repeated attempts to target the SAD chief. He recalled the 2024 assassination attempt against Badal while he was performing penance outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Kler said the Maharashtra Police investigation must identify everyone involved in the alleged conspiracy. He stressed that the Shiromani Akali Dal would not be intimidated.
The BJP also condemned the assault. BJP MP Tarun Chugh called the incident deeply unfortunate, particularly because it occurred at a sacred religious site.
Chugh said political differences should be addressed through dialogue and discussion rather than violence. He urged authorities to take strict action against those found responsible.
