State Directed To Decide On Premature Release Of Two Brothers Serving Life Sentence for 22 Years

The Allahabad High Court has directed the state government to make a decision by October 22, 2024, on the premature release of two brothers, Shalu alias Manjeet Pandey and Little Pandey, who have been serving life sentences for 22 years on a murder charge.

Application for Release Pending Since 2023

The government lawyer informed the court that the brothers’ application for release was submitted to the state on December 5, 2023, and March 1, 2024. The court issued the directive while disposing of a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of the brothers.

Legal Battle for Premature Release

Advocate Adarsh Shukla, representing the brothers, argued that after being sentenced to life imprisonment in 2010, the Supreme Court directed the government to decide on their premature release application. Despite this, no decision was made, prompting the habeas corpus petition.
