Somnath Temple Sees Unprecedented Digital Surge Under PM Modi’s Heritage Push

The Somnath Temple in Gujarat, revered as the first of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is witnessing unprecedented online attention, with more people searching for the shrine on the internet than at any point in the past two decades.

This surge in digital interest mirrors the growing footfall at the centuries-old temple, which attracts nearly one crore pilgrims annually.

Observers describe this phenomenon as the ‘Modi effect’, reflecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long-standing emphasis on civilisational pride, spiritual tourism and heritage-led development.

Under his leadership, Somnath has entered what many describe as a Suvarna Yug (golden age), blending faith with modern infrastructure and global outreach.

Ancient texts mention Somnath as one of Hinduism’s holiest shrines, and the temple has endured repeated destruction and reconstruction over the centuries.

Rebuilt in its modern form in 1951 after Independence, the temple today stands as a symbol of resilience and continuity.

The renewed attention also coincides with 2026 marking a millennium since Mahmud of Ghazni’s attack on the temple in January 1026.

A thousand years later, Somnath stands restored in grandeur and is set to mark 75 years of its inauguration with the ‘Somnath Swabhimaan Parv’.

Today, Somnath features among India’s top 10 most searched religious destinations.

Its digital footprint closely mirrors physical footfall, with social media impressions crossing 1.37 billion in 2025 alone.

This reflects how improved connectivity, cultural initiatives and consistent promotion have expanded the temple’s reach far beyond its geographic boundaries.

Over the past two decades, Somnath has emerged as a living example of how tradition and progress can coexist, reaffirming its place at the heart of India’s spiritual and cultural consciousness.
