PM Narendra Modi, Chancellor Friedrich Merz Reaffirm Commitment To A Free And Rules-Based Indo-Pacific

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday delivered a strong geopolitical signal by reaffirming their shared commitment to a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.

During high-level talks in Ahmedabad, the two leaders underlined respect for international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and announced a new bilateral Indo-Pacific consultation mechanism to deepen strategic coordination.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed Germany’s expanding engagement in the Indo-Pacific, particularly its active role in the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), which India and Germany co-lead.

He said stronger maritime cooperation, capacity building, and resource sharing are essential to maintaining stability amid rising regional competition.

Both leaders reaffirmed that democratic values, strategic trust, and mutual respect form the backbone of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.

Prime Minister Modi and Chancellor Merz reviewed bilateral ties and exchanged views on pressing regional and global developments, reinforcing alignment on a rules-based international order.

IMEC Backs Economic Connectivity and Supply Chains

A major focus of the talks remained economic connectivity. PM Modi and Merz strongly backed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), describing it as a transformative initiative capable of reshaping global trade flows and supply chains.

They expressed optimism ahead of the first IMEC ministerial meeting, which aims to translate vision into action.

On multilateral reforms, Prime Minister Modi and Merz reiterated the urgent need to overhaul the United Nations Security Council.

They jointly called for expanding both permanent and non-permanent membership to reflect contemporary global realities and urged progress toward text-based negotiations at the Intergovernmental Negotiations forum.

The two leaders also addressed ongoing global conflicts. Prime Minister Modi and Merz voiced concern over the war in Ukraine and supported efforts toward a just and lasting peace grounded in international law.

They welcomed the Gaza Peace Plan and described the adoption of UNSC Resolution 2803 as a constructive step toward ending hostilities.

Climate cooperation featured prominently. Prime Minister Modi and Merz called for accelerated global climate action, enhanced climate finance, and greater technology transfer to support developing countries.

They highlighted cooperation on renewable energy, green hydrogen, battery storage, and the India–Germany Platform for Investments in Renewable Energy Worldwide.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded that India and Germany are shaping a partnership that blends geopolitics, sustainability, and economic resilience, strengthening global stability in an increasingly uncertain world.
