Slovenia Supports India’s Permanent UNSC Seat; Advocates For Reform

Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Tanja Fajon, voiced strong support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Her remarks, made after a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, underscored the need for reform in the UNSC to better align with the current geopolitical landscape.

Support For UNSC Reform

Tanja Fajon, who was in India for a diplomatic visit, emphasized that the UNSC needs to reflect the changing global dynamics.

She stated, “We definitely support UNSC reform. We need a better reflection of the current geopolitical situation, both among non-permanent and permanent members.”

She further added, “If the number of members increases, there is no reason why India should not be part of the table.”

Currently, the UNSC has five permanent members – the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France – with India having served multiple times as a non-permanent member.

Deputy PM Fajon’s remarks come as Slovenia prepares to assume a non-permanent seat on the UNSC.

The two leaders, Tanja Fajon and S Jaishankar, also discussed global issues such as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the instability in the Middle East.

Deputy PM Tanja Fajon noted the importance of having strong allies to maintain peace and stability worldwide.

During her visit, Tanja Fajon expressed interest in furthering defense production collaboration between Slovenia and India.

She revealed plans for political consultations in May 2025 in Delhi, where both countries would explore opportunities for Indian firms to contribute to defense production in Slovenia.

These talks come amid growing concerns over US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which Deputy PM Fajon warned could destabilize the global economy.

She argued that trade wars are harmful and counterproductive for nations worldwide.

Trade & Economic Relations

In addition to geopolitical issues, Tanja Fajon and S Jaishankar also discussed expanding trade ties between Slovenia and India.

Both leaders emphasized that the two countries could explore new avenues for economic cooperation in various sectors, such as technology and manufacturing.

Deputy PM Fajon’s visit highlights Slovenia’s commitment to strengthening its ties with India, both politically and economically.

Tanja Fajon’s visit to India is a significant step toward enhancing bilateral relations, particularly in the context of UNSC reform and defense collaboration.

Her support for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC aligns with India’s long-standing goal of playing a more prominent role in global decision-making.

As both nations continue their diplomatic engagement, the focus on reforming international institutions and expanding trade will likely drive closer cooperation between the two countries.
