Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba Meets PM Modi; Submits Memorandum On Key State Issues

Sikkim’s lone Lok Sabha MP, Indra Hang Subba, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House on Thursday and submitted a memorandum seeking the Centre’s intervention on several long-pending constitutional, developmental and strategic matters concerning the Himalayan state.

During the meeting, Subba conveyed greetings on behalf of the people of Sikkim and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay). He thanked the NDA government for its continued support for the state’s growth and development.

The Prime Minister also enquired about the recent tunnel mishap in Sikkim.

Subba briefed him on the state government’s response and expressed gratitude for the Centre’s concern and support extended to the affected families.

The memorandum requested the early inclusion of 12 left-out communities in the Scheduled Tribe list. It also sought amendments to the Representation of the People Act, 1950, to facilitate Scheduled Tribe reservation in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly and resolve pending issues concerning the Limboo and Tamang Scheduled Tribes.

Subba urged the Centre to construct a Greenfield Highway parallel to National Highway-10 and develop an all-weather strategic road along the Indo-Nepal border connecting Border Outposts. He also requested the restoration of scheduled commercial flights at Pakyong Airport.

The memorandum proposed establishing an IIT or its extension campus and setting up a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Sikkim.

The MP further sought the Centre’s support in facilitating the visit of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa to Sikkim.

According to the MP’s office, Subba expressed confidence that Prime Minister Modi would positively consider the proposals and help accelerate Sikkim’s inclusive, strategic and sustainable development.
