Shibu Soren’s Final Journey: Last Rites To Be Held In Nemra Village Today

Today, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and revered tribal leader Shibu Soren’s family will lay him to rest in Nemra, his native village near Barka Nala in Jharkhand’s Bokaro district.

Prominent national leaders and thousands of supporters will attend the funeral ceremony scheduled for 2 PM.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi will be among the dignitaries attending the last rites.

Leaders from across the political spectrum will gather in Nemra to pay their respects to the former Jharkhand Chief Minister, who left an indelible mark on Indian politics through decades of service to the tribal community.

Fondly referred to as ‘Dishom Guru’, Shibu Soren held a unique position in the hearts of tribal communities in eastern India.

The Jharkhand government has declared a three-day state mourning from 4 to 6 August.

During this period, the government will fly the national flag at half-mast, cancel all official programmes, and suspend entertainment and cultural events as a mark of respect.

Family and Community Prepare for Farewell

Soren’s younger son, Basant Soren, will perform the last rites and light the funeral pyre.

A large number of JMM workers, tribal community members, and political supporters have already begun assembling in Nemra to honour the leader who championed their rights throughout his political career.

President Droupadi Murmu visited Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, where Shibu Soren breathed his last on 4 August at 8:56 AM following a prolonged illness linked to kidney complications.

She met the Soren family, including his son and current Chief Minister Hemant Soren, offering her condolences on behalf of the nation.

Soren’s death marks the end of a defining chapter in Jharkhand’s political history.

A three-time Chief Minister and a long-serving Member of Parliament, he played a pivotal role in the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state in 2000.

His relentless advocacy for tribal welfare and social justice earned him widespread respect across party lines.

As the state prepares to bid farewell, Shibu Soren’s legacy as a pioneering leader of the tribal movement remains a guiding light for generations to come.
