Security Situation In Manipur Has Shown Marked Improvement, Says Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi

Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi said the security situation in the Northeast, particularly in Manipur, has shown marked improvement.

Addressing the Indian Army’s annual press conference on Tuesday, he credited neutral, transparent and decisive actions by the security forces for the positive developments witnessed in 2025.

Speaking to mediapersons, General Dwivedi said coordinated security measures and proactive government initiatives helped restore stability in the violence-hit state.

The Army chief said the security forces continue to work actively to shield the Northeast from spillover effects arising from instability in neighbouring Myanmar.

He emphasised that India has adopted a firm and forward-looking approach in response to the turbulence across the border.

“As regards the Northeast, neutral, transparent and decisive action by security forces, along with proactive government initiatives, has led to a marked improvement in Manipur during 2025,” he stated.

General Dwivedi highlighted several developments as indicators of improving stability. These included the peaceful conduct of the Durand Cup, the resumption of cultural festivals, and the renewal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki insurgent groups in September 2025.

According to him, these milestones reflect growing confidence and a gradual return to normal life in the region.

The Army chief further said the Indian Army, in coordination with the Assam Rifles and the Ministry of Home Affairs, has strengthened efforts to protect the northeastern frontier.

A comprehensive multi-agency security grid now operates along the border to prevent adverse spillover effects from Myanmar.

“In response to turbulence in Myanmar, Assam Rifles, the Army, and the Home Ministry are working together to insulate the Northeast,” he said.

He added that the successful completion of phase two elections in Myanmar could enable more effective engagement between the two sides.

Borders Remain Stable; Vigilance Continues

General Dwivedi noted that conditions along the northern and northwestern borders remain stable and under firm control. However, he stressed the need for constant vigilance to maintain security.

Turning to Jammu and Kashmir, he said the Union Territory witnessed significant positive change in 2025. The shift from terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape, he added.

During the past year, security forces eliminated 31 terrorists, 65 per cent of whom were of Pakistani origin, including those involved in the Pahalgam terror attack.
