Security forces killed a terrorist on Monday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. They recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from the site.
Officials are working to confirm the slain terrorist’s identity and affiliation.
An encounter broke out earlier in the day between security forces and terrorists hiding in Krumbhoora (Zachaldara) village in the Rajwar area.
Security forces launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) after receiving intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the village.
“As the security forces closed in, the terrorists opened fire, triggering an encounter,” an official said. “Two to three terrorists are still inside the cordoned area. Security forces have sealed all exit points.”
A joint team of the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Special Operations Group (SOG) is conducting the operation. Authorities have sealed off the area and deployed extra reinforcements. They have advised civilians to stay indoors for their safety.
Intelligence agencies believe terror handlers in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have increased activity after peaceful Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in 2024.
Recently, terrorists killed three civilians, including a 14-year-old boy, in Kathua district. Security forces recovered the bodies of two civilians who went missing from Qazigund in Kulgam district on February 14.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has chaired three security review meetings this year. He instructed security forces to prevent infiltration and show zero tolerance for terrorism.
Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has also held two security meetings. He directed security forces to dismantle the terror network supported by drug smuggling, hawala rackets, and local sympathizers.
