Saumya Dey’s New Book Reassesses Indic Kingship Beyond Marxist Historiography

In an academic landscape often dominated by Marxist interpretations of Indian history, Saumya Dey’s Indic Kingship in Theory and Practice: Reconsidering Marxist Historiography (500 BCE–1800 CE) offers a refreshing and much-needed re-evaluation of one of the most enduring institutions of Indian civilisation — kingship.

Published by BluOne Ink, the book presents a nuanced exploration of how dharma, scripture, and practical governance shaped the political imagination and functioning of Indic rulers across two millennia.

Dey moves beyond the conventional portrayal of kings as mere wielders of coercive power or instruments of class domination. Instead, he demonstrates that Indic kingship was deeply embedded in a moral and cosmic framework.

The king was not only a political authority but also a guardian of social order (rita and dharma), a performer of ritual duties, and a maintainer of balance between different sections of society.

Drawing from ancient texts, inscriptions, and historical practices, the author illustrates how kingship functioned as both a theoretical ideal and a pragmatic institution that evolved while remaining rooted in Indic civilisational ethos.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its critical engagement with Marxist historiography.

Dey argues that the reductionist lens of ‘feudalism’, ‘class struggle’, or ‘oriental despotism’ fails to capture the complexity of Indic political thought.

By tracing the evolution of kingship from the early historic period through the classical, medieval, and pre-colonial eras, Dey shows remarkable continuity in concepts of legitimacy, righteous rule, and the reciprocal relationship between the ruler and the ruled.

The book also examines how this tradition responded to changing historical circumstances, including the arrival of Islamic polities and eventually colonial modernity.

The cover art featuring ancient Indian temple carvings and royal motifs aptly symbolises the deep cultural roots that Dey seeks to recover. His work provides a balanced and rigorous reassessment of India’s political traditions.

Why the Book Matters

For students of history, political theory, and cultural studies, Indic Kingship in Theory and Practice offers valuable insights into indigenous frameworks of governance, power, duty, and statecraft, enriching contemporary discussions on decolonising Indian historiography.
