A "credible information" was cited by Sanjay Raut.
A Mumbai Court has convicted Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut in a defamation case filed by Medha K. Somaiya, the wife of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. The Mazagon Metropolitan Magistrate Court sentenced Raut to 15 days in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000. This ruling stems from a libel suit initiated in 2022 after Raut alleged a Rs 100-crore toilet construction scam linked to an NGO run by the Somaiyas.
Raut claimed he merely raised questions based on official records regarding the toilet construction issue, asserting that the ruling MahaYuti alliance leaders supported his concerns. He plans to challenge the conviction in a higher court. Medha Somaiya expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating it vindicates her faith in the judiciary and will deter similar allegations in the future. She emphasized her commitment to defending her family’s reputation. The Somaiyas previously reported the allegations to Mulund Police and later filed a defamation suit, denying any wrongdoing.
The ruling coalition welcomed the court’s decision, while opposition parties criticized it as politically motivated ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly elections.
