Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Dr Dinesh Sharma, says the service rendered by sanitation workers is worthy of the highest respect.
He states that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath refer to them as Safai Mitras, but they are more than friends; they are family members of society.
Dr Sharma explains that just as a mother maintains cleanliness in her home, sanitation workers care for the cleanliness of society with affection and dedication.
He adds that the dignity and recognition given to this community under the present BJP government reflect a profound shift in social attitude.
Dr Sharma recalls that during the Kumbh Mela, the Prime Minister demonstrated his respect for this community by washing the feet of Valmiki workers. Once neglected, this section of society is now being given the honour it deserves under the present leadership.
He mentions that during his tenure as Mayor of Lucknow, he worked closely with the Valmiki and Dhanuk communities, understanding their challenges firsthand.
Even as Deputy Chief Minister, he chose to live in his old home located near sanitation workers’ colonies to maintain his connection with them.
Dr Sharma highlights several initiatives undertaken during his mayoral tenure, including the establishment of Valmiki Upvan, Valmiki Prerna Sthal, Valmiki Gate, and multiple statues and parks dedicated to Maharishi Valmiki.
He remarks that a strong bond of trust now exists between the Valmiki community, the Prime Minister, and the Chief Minister.
He adds that Maharishi Valmiki introduced Lord Ram to the world through his writings, and without the Ramayana, the divine story would have remained unknown.
Dr Sharma participates in multiple Valmiki Jayanti programmes across Lucknow, offering prayers and garlands at various Valmiki temples and parks.
He also joins Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the Valmiki Jayanti celebration at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, where he addresses the community and honours its members.
