Samvatsari marks the final and most sacred day of the Paryushan festival, which the Svetambara sect of Jainism observes.
The occasion centres on introspection, repentance and seeking forgiveness for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly during the previous year.
Jains use the day to reflect on their conduct, acknowledge their shortcomings, seek forgiveness for broken vows and repent for wrongdoing.
The practice reflects the belief that forgiveness helps people overcome negative emotions and progress towards spiritual purification.
Samvatsari embodies important Jain principles, including ahimsa, or non-violence, universal friendship and compassion.
The observance encourages devotees to release anger, ego, resentment and animosity while examining their actions and seeking personal improvement.
The festival falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Panchami according to the Jain calendar.
Devotees mark the occasion through prayers, self-reflection and the exchange of ‘Michhami Dukkadam’, seeking forgiveness from others for any harm caused through thoughts, words or actions.
While Svetambara Jains observe Samvatsari at the conclusion of Paryushan, the Digambara community marks Kshamavani as its corresponding day of forgiveness. It follows the ten-day Das Lakshan Parva and similarly focuses on repentance, forgiveness, compassion and goodwill towards all living beings.
The observances across Jain traditions underline the wider spiritual message of self-correction, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
Shah’s greeting highlighted these enduring values and their relevance in strengthening relationships and encouraging a compassionate approach towards others.
