Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed officials to investigate the suspected spurious liquor deaths in Sagar district and take the strongest possible action against anyone found responsible.
The MP CM asked the concerned Minister and senior officials to reach the affected location without delay. He also made it clear that his government would not accept such incidents.
Authorities said residents of four villages reportedly consumed illicit liquor on Saturday night before several people developed health complications.
The incident has so far claimed 11 lives, while approximately 35 people have sought medical assistance.
Doctors have transferred seriously ill victims to Bundelkhand Medical College and Sagar District Hospital for specialised treatment.
Medical personnel have reported symptoms such as bluish skin and muscular stiffness among some victims.
Sagar Collector Pratibha Pal said officials began receiving information about suspected liquor-related illnesses and deaths during the morning.
Healthcare teams are visiting affected settlements to identify people who may have consumed the suspected liquor. Officials are also taking symptomatic individuals to hospitals for medical evaluation.
Pratibha Pal has urged anyone who consumed alcohol within the previous 24 to 48 hours to seek medical screening, particularly after experiencing unusual symptoms.
The district authorities have sealed six liquor outlets in the area while officials examine samples to determine whether contaminated or spurious liquor caused the deaths.
Officials said medical examinations, post-mortem findings and laboratory reports will establish the exact cause of death.
The tragedy has drawn criticism from the opposition Congress, with state party president Jitu Patwari accusing the liquor mafia of operating without adequate deterrence.
Patwari claimed that 15 people had died in the incident, although authorities have confirmed 11 fatalities so far and the higher figure remains unverified.
The deaths come during the state government’s ‘Nasha Se Doori Hai Zaroori 2.0’ campaign, launched on July 15 to raise awareness about substance abuse and promote a drug-free Madhya Pradesh.
