Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday released a fresh medical update on climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health, stating that doctors have detected signs of dehydration, compensated acidosis, low serum potassium levels and increasing urinary ketones.
The hospital also confirmed that Wangchuk continues to refuse intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solutions, and medication despite medical advice.
Doctors found Wangchuk conscious at the time of admission, while his pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation remained stable. Medical tests showed signs of dehydration, reduced serum potassium levels, and a blood sugar reading of 78 mg/dl.
The hospital further stated that Wangchuk’s urinary ketone levels increased from 1+ during admission to 3+ by 1 PM, indicating further metabolic changes in his body after the prolonged fast.
Safdarjung Hospital said doctors recommended intravenous fluids and other medical support, but Wangchuk declined the suggested treatment.
The medical team continues to monitor his condition closely and is counselling him to accept necessary care.
Nitin Dighe, a member of the medical team that monitored Wangchuk at Jantar Mantar, claimed that the doctors treating him before his hospitalisation were not informed about the reason behind his transfer.
Dighe stated that his team had monitored Wangchuk’s health for nearly 20 days, but authorities allegedly did not allow them to meet him after his admission. He questioned the decision to hospitalise the activist and claimed that doctors could have provided the required treatment at the protest venue itself.
Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, wrote to Safdarjung Hospital and requested that officials complete the discharge procedures so the family could shift him to a medical centre of their choice.
Authorities shifted Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated during his 21-day hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
