Retired IAS Officer Amit Khare Appointed Secretary To Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Sunday approved the appointment of retired IAS officer Amit Khare as secretary to Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan.

Amit Khare, a 1985-batch officer of the Jharkhand cadre, will serve on a three-year contract, according to the government order.

Amit Khare’s Role and Previous Positions

The Prime Minister’s Office appointed Khare as advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2021 after he retired as Union Higher Education Secretary. Officials scheduled his advisory term to run until June 2026.

During his career, Khare held key positions, including Union Information and Broadcasting Secretary, and worked in the finance, education, and general administration departments of Jharkhand. As Higher Education Secretary, he played a pivotal role in drafting and implementing the National Education Policy.

Before Jharkhand’s creation in 2000, Khare served across undivided Bihar, notably as district collector of West Singhbhum from 1995 to 1997, where he exposed irregularities that led to the fodder scam investigation.

Alongside Khare’s appointment, the ACC cleared the posting of Chandrasekar S, a 2014-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, as private secretary to Vice-President Radhakrishnan.

Radhakrishnan assumed office as Vice-President on September 12 after securing 152 more votes than the Opposition candidate Justice B Sudershan Reddy, a retired Supreme Court judge, in the September 9 election.

Jagdeep Dhankhar’s mid-term resignation on July 21 necessitated the election. Dhankhar, who presided over the Rajya Sabha, stepped down citing health reasons and tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. His term was originally set to continue until 2027.
