Renowned Indian photojournalist Raghu Rai passed away on Sunday at the age of 83. His death marks the end of a remarkable career. He helped define modern visual storytelling in India.
His death was confirmed by family members, closing a chapter on one of the country’s most influential photographic voices.
Born in 1942 in Jhang, Raghu Rai began his journey in photography in the 1960s and quickly rose to prominence. He served as chief photographer at The Statesman before going on to play a pivotal role at India Today, where his powerful imagery helped shape the visual identity of Indian journalism.
Raghu Rai’s global recognition came in 1977 when he was nominated to join Magnum Photos by the legendary Henri Cartier-Bresson.
The rare honour highlighted his exceptional ability to blend artistic vision with journalistic depth.
Over the decades, Raghu Rai documented some of India’s most significant moments, including the aftermath of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. His lens also captured intimate portraits of global figures such as Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama, reflecting both human vulnerability and resilience.
Known for his emotional depth and narrative precision, Raghu Rai’s work has been exhibited and published internationally, earning widespread acclaim. His photographs not only chronicled events but also captured the spirit of a transforming nation.
In recognition of his immense contribution to photography, Raghu Rai was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972, among numerous other honours over his lifetime. His legacy endures through a body of work that continues to inspire generations of photographers and storytellers.
