Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu on Wednesday inspected the redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station along with senior officials of the Ferozepur Division to review preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit on July 17, when he will likely inaugurate the upgraded station.
Bittu thanked Prime Minister Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the redevelopment project, describing it as a major gift to the people of Punjab and a step towards transforming one of the region’s key railway stations into a world-class passenger facility.
The 110-year-old station has been redeveloped at an approximate cost of Rs 125 crore while preserving its architectural heritage and incorporating elements reflecting Punjab’s rich cultural ethos.
The upgraded station features a double-height air concourse, heavy steel platform roofing, slip-resistant flooring, energy-efficient LED lighting, entry points from both sides of the city, and two new foot-over bridges.
Other facilities include a 40-metre-wide trough roof covering 200 metres of platform length, a 36-metre-wide air concourse spanning 1,770 sq m, a second station entry with a 300 sq m building, and a 4,855 sq m parking area.
Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station records an average daily footfall of around 7,500 passengers.
A total of 66 Up and 66 Down trains halt at the station, including two pairs of Vande Bharat Express trains, one Humsafar Express, one Garib Rath Express, along with several Mail, Express and passenger services.
The station exclusively serves passenger operations and does not handle goods traffic.
During the inspection, Bittu reviewed passenger amenities and expressed satisfaction with the redevelopment works, stating that the upgraded station will improve passenger convenience while reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to modern, safe and accessible infrastructure.
