Rajnath Singh Marks Emergency Anniversary With Democracy Pledge

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said the 51st anniversary of the Emergency serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democracy, constitutional principles and the rights guaranteed to every citizen. He stated that the Narendra Modi-led government remains firmly committed to upholding the Constitution and strengthening democratic institutions across the country.

In a post on X, Rajnath Singh reflected on the impact of the Emergency on democratic governance and civil liberties. He said the period witnessed restrictions on freedom of speech and expression, attempts to weaken the judiciary and violations of the rights of millions of citizens.

The Minister said the Emergency highlighted the dangers of authoritarian rule and showed how unchecked power can threaten democratic institutions, constitutional values and citizens’ freedoms. He further urged people to use the anniversary as an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to democracy and the Constitution.

Rajnath Singh also reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting constitutional principles and strengthening democratic institutions.

Paying tribute to those who resisted the Emergency, the Minister said the nation remains indebted to individuals who courageously defended democracy, justice and citizens’ rights.

India marked the 51st anniversary of the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on June 25, 1975.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues to describe the period as one of the darkest chapters in independent India’s democratic history.

The BJP is observing ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ across Bihar, Haryana and several other states to commemorate the anniversary and remember the impact of the Emergency on India’s democratic framework.
