Railway Funding For Assam Has Increased Fivefold Under BJP, Says PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a strong attack on previous Congress governments, accusing them of allocating a ‘low budget’ for railway development in Assam and neglecting the state’s connectivity needs for decades.

Addressing a public programme in Kaliabor, PM Modi said that when Congress was in power at the Centre, Assam received around ₹2,000 crore annually for railways.

Under the BJP-led government, he said, the allocation has increased to nearly ₹10,000 crore a year, marking a fivefold rise.

The Prime Minister said the increased investment has translated into large-scale railway infrastructure development across Assam. He pointed to new rail lines, track doubling, electrification projects and improved passenger facilities, all of which have boosted capacity and efficiency in the region.

PM Modi also announced the launch of three new train services from Kaliabor, calling it a major step towards expanding Assam’s rail connectivity. He said the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will connect Guwahati with Kolkata, offering faster and more comfortable long-distance travel.

In addition, two Amrit Bharat Express trains will run across key stations in Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, directly benefiting lakhs of passengers.

PM Modi said improved rail connectivity will open new markets for Assam’s traders, ease access to education for students, and simplify travel across regions. He noted that distance, both physical and emotional, had long held back the Northeast, eroding development and public trust.

The BJP, he added, has addressed this by strengthening roads, railways, airways and waterways.

Earlier, the Prime Minister performed the bhoomi pujan for the ₹6,950-crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure-led growth in Assam.
