Congress MP Rahul Gandhi embarked on a spiritual visit to Punjab’s Amritsar, where he paid a visit to the revered Golden Temple. After offering prayers at the Golden Temple, Rahul Gandhi engaged in ‘kar sewa,’ a selfless act of service, by joining others in washing dishes alongside Gurudwara volunteers.
A Congress official mentioned that Rahul Gandhi would be spending the night in the city, emphasizing the personal and spiritual nature of his visit. In light of this, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Waring urged party workers to respect his privacy and refrain from physically attending the visit, suggesting that they show their support in spirit and await the next opportunity to meet him.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Amritsar occurs amidst heightened tensions between the Congress and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) due to the recent arrest of MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira. The Punjab police arrested Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira on allegations of involvement in drug smuggling and money laundering.
Khaira, in response, accused the AAP and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of harboring harmful intentions, stating that he would not be surprised if they attempted to harm him physically. The AAP government asserted that “fresh evidence” in a 2015 case led to Khaira’s arrest.
While the national leadership of both the AAP and Congress may be inclined to cooperate within the INDIA bloc, the arrest of Khaira has exposed regional rivalries that could complicate their collaboration.
