Protests By Junior Doctors Enter 15th Day Amid Demands For Justice

The fast-unto-death demonstration by junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, sparked by the horrific rape and murder of their colleague, has now entered its 15th day.

On Saturday, a significant rally is planned to commence from the victim’s residence in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, and proceed to Esplanade, where the junior doctors continue their protest.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF), leading the movement, has invited the public to join the rally and announced that demonstrations will take place at every medical college and hospital across the state in support of their demands.

On Friday night, the WBJDF issued a warning to the state government, threatening to resume a complete cease-work protest if their demands are not addressed by October 21. This decision follows consultations with senior colleagues and highlights the urgency of the situation.

The ongoing protests began after the recovery of the victim’s body from the RG Kar premises on August 9. It remains to be seen if the state government will engage in new discussions with the protesting doctors in an effort to resolve the ongoing stalemate.

In related developments, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held meetings with state bureaucrats, particularly those in the Health Department, to assess the progress of infrastructure upgrades at various state-run medical facilities. She emphasized that all pending work must be completed by October 25.

A critical hearing is scheduled in the Supreme Court after the Diwali vacation, during which the state government is expected to report on the status of security and infrastructure improvements at the medical colleges and hospitals.
