Proposal Sent to Centre for Approval; Jammu, Srinagar to Get Metro Connectivity

The administration of Jammu and Kashmir has submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, outlining plans for the construction of metro lines in Jammu and Srinagar. The aim of this initiative is to enhance the public transport system and stimulate economic activities in the region.

According to the Indian Express, Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has forwarded the proposal for ministerial consultation. If approved, it would mark the first metro line in the Union Territory. Given the unique terrain and specific requirements of the region, the government intends to introduce a MetroLite system instead of the conventional metro rail system found in cities like Delhi.

Sinha explained, “Since a metro line like Delhi will not be possible for J&K, a MetroLite has been proposed. I think there was some consultation on whether a MetroNeo should be approved for Srinagar and Jammu, but I think a MetroLite is what we are looking at, for now.” The plan envisions a 25 km metro line for Srinagar and a 23 km line for Jammu.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had previously received requests for financial assistance for metro projects in five cities, including Jammu and Srinagar. MetroLite is a light urban rail transit system that offers reduced costs and lower capacity compared to traditional metro rail systems. It provides advantages such as lower capital expenditure and reduced operation and maintenance costs, making it a more feasible option for the region. MetroLite can also act as a feeder system to the conventional metro rail system, thanks to its light civil structure, lower power requirements, smaller stations, and cost-effectiveness.

The development of infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir has been a key focus of the Central government in recent years. During the Union Budget address, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the rollout of elevated light metro rail projects in both Srinagar and Jammu, scheduled for 2023-2024. These projects are expected to improve commuting in the capital cities and alleviate traffic congestion.
